About this book

The Twins of Table Mountain, and Other Stories is a book by Bret Harte. The contents list titles such as The Twins of Table Mountain, An Heiress of Red Dog and The Great Deadwood Mystery, among others. Chapter I, A Cloud on the Mountain, opens with a description of a vast stony level, upheaved so far above the surrounding country that its vague outlines, viewed from the nearest valley, seemed a mere cloud-streak resting upon the lesser hills.

A character named Ruth says of a girl that she is not to blame because her mother drinks, and her father is a shyster. The text mentions an announcement that a woman would reopen the infelix Rockville Hotel and keep it herself. A passage asks what wonder it is that the American householder translated into German life feels himself in a new Eden of domestic possibilities unrealized in any other country.
