About this book
The title page of this volume presents the works of the highly experienced and famous chymist, John Rudolph Glauber, and says they contain a great variety of choice secrets in medicine and alchymy, in the working of metallick mines and in the separation of metals. German captions label parts of a furnace: the oven, the vessel in the oven, the grate, the hearth and the receivers.
One passage discusses a tincture of gold, saying that true potable gold must be more than a coloured water. Another reflects on salt, noting that Plato and other philosophers observed that nothing alive exists without it and that dead bodies were kept from rotting by it, so that they supposed something divine lay hidden in it. A further passage describes how something found in the dregs of corn or wine is little valued until distillation and rectification raise its virtue, and compares this with the tinctures hidden in metals.
