About this book
Jeremiah Curtin is the author of The Mongols in Russia, which is dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States. The note says that Mr. Curtin used the early chronicles of China, Persia, and Russia, and went several times to Russia and once to the Orient to obtain them. The text tells of a terrible storm that came upon the invaders and destroyed the greater part of their fleet, an event attributed to divine interposition and said to have made such an impression upon Askold and Dir that they became Christians.
The text says that Vassili, either wishing to be rid of Mongol robbery or not desiring to quarrel with the Khan then occupying the throne, sent against Ulu voevodas with whom Dmitri Shemyaká and Dmitri Krasni, his two cousins, joined their forces. The text says that the moment news of this came to Novgorod, Mystislav commanded to sound the bell of the assembly, and the whole city came to him.
