About this book

The Story of the Other Wise Man is by Henry Van Dyke. The preface describes the little story as set afloat on the sea of books, and as not a man-of-war, nor even a high-sided merchantman, only a small, peaceful sailing-vessel. The writer says the curious tales of the Three Wise Men of the East were studied and loved, but of the Fourth Wise Man nothing had been heard until that night. The writer says people have asked many times why the Fourth Wise Man was made to tell a lie, in the cottage at Bethlehem, to save the little child's life.

Vasda slackens her pace and begins to pick her way more carefully as she passes into the shadow of a grove of date-palms. A passage says a gift consecrated to the worship of religion had twice been drawn from a man's hand to the service of humanity, and calls the present choice the third trial, the ultimate probation, the final and irrevocable choice.
