About this book
Master and Man is by Leo Tolstoy, translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude. The text says it happened in winter, on the day after St. Nicholas’s Day, when the innkeeper Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov, a Second Guild merchant, being a church elder, had to go to church and also to entertain his relatives and friends at home.
Nikita would reply to Vasili Andreevich that he understands very well, and the text says he was quite aware that Vasili Andreevich was cheating him. Vasili Andreevich pulls up and says they must be astray again, and Nikita silently gets out of the sledge and starts to feel about in the snow, going first to one side and then to the other. A man sees himself lying in his bed at home, unable to get up though the police-officer Ivan Matveich would soon call for him, and asks his wife, Nikolaevna, whether he has come yet.
