About this book
The Story of the Sun covers the New York newspaper The Sun from 1833 to 1918. It is by Frank M. O'Brien, with an introduction by Edward Page Mitchell, editor of The Sun, and it includes illustrations and facsimiles, among them the paper's first head-line and an illustration of its founder, Benjamin H. Day. The introduction begins by saying that a newspaper may be greater than the sum of its parts.
One passage discusses a balloon hoax by Poe and compares it with the moon hoax of Locke, noting that the moon hoax lasted for weeks and the balloon hoax for a day. Another passage concerns the writer Dieuaide, who wrote the first published description of St. Pierre after the eruption of Mont Pelee. A further passage describes Bennett, who started the Herald and printed the first money-market report in his second issue, on May 11, 1835.
