Charles Lyell

Charles Lyell (1797-1875) was a Scottish lawyer turned geologist whose work established uniformitarianism, the view that the earth's past can be read from processes visible in the present. A friend and mentor to Darwin, he pressed the case for an ancient earth long before he accepted evolution himself.
