About this book

The Survey of Cornwall by Richard Carew comes with an epistle concerning the excellencies of the English tongue. The survey says that Earles and Dukes have from the beginning been privileged with royal jurisdiction or Crowne rights, namely the liberty to send Burgesses to the Parliaments, returne of writs, custome, toll, Mynes, Treasure-trovee and wards. One account tells of the last Cornish commotion, when diuers Gent. with their wives and families fled to the protection of a place where the Rebels besieged them.

A list of subscribers names, among others, John St. Aubyn, of Clowance, Baronet, and Rev. Mr. Jerveys Allen, of Helston. A note in the book says that Mr. Carew subscribes himself, His Lordships poor Kinsman, Richard Carew of Antonie. The book says that in his Preface Mr. Carew observes that when he first composed the Treatise, not minding that it should be published in Print, he caused only certain written Copies to be given to some of his Friends.
