About this book

Bronze warriors and marble fountains fill Merimna, a city whose people live among memorials of their ancient victories. Beyond the mountains, neighbouring tribes still fear the names of its long-dead champions. A boy called Rold grows fascinated by Welleran's sword and by the night guard's songs, giving the opening story a human focus within its dreamlike setting. Published in 1908, this collection of short fantasy tales builds its imagined world through monuments, legends and the lingering force of memory.

Lord Dunsany also turns from heroic cities to a darker landscape of souls, graves and loyalty. Elsewhere, three disreputable friends brave a wet midnight to dig a grave near an archbishop's marble tomb. The contrast sets their friendship beside the grandeur of his resting place.

About the author

Lord Dunsany - BDeBooks
Lord Dunsany

Lord Dunsany developed imagined mythologies, remote kingdoms and compact wonder tales across fiction and drama. Born Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, he published The Gods of Pegāna in 1905 as his first book, introducing a created pantheon in a deliberately archaic style.
