About this book

Sleeping beside a river, young gods dream a marble city into being, complete with fountains, terraces and a towering citadel. Sardathrion sets the scale of Lord Dunsany's 1906 collection: imagined places take shape through divine desires, while Time moves among powers that distrust their own servant. These short fantasy tales inhabit the dream countries of Yarnith, Averon and Zarkandhu, where gods and human beings share a world of uncertain authority.

In another tale, the sea arrives with Slid and his armies of waves, prompting a struggle with the winds and cliffs. Elsewhere, Fate and Chance play across the sky using the gods as pieces, and a prophet glimpses the hand directing them. Repeated phrases, formal speech and personified forces give the prose the cadence of invented legend. Readers interested in fantasy's treatment of belief and power will find stories that turn rivers, stars and whole worlds into participants in their disputes.

About the author

Lord Dunsany

Lord Dunsany developed imagined mythologies, remote kingdoms and compact wonder tales across fiction and drama. Born Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, he published The Gods of Pegāna in 1905 as his first book, introducing a created pantheon in a deliberately archaic style.
