About this book
Mrs. Tabitha Twitchit is an old cat and an anxious parent who keeps losing her kittens. On baking day she shuts them in a cupboard, catches Moppet and Mittens, but cannot find Tom. She goes up and down the old house mewing for him, while Moppet and Mittens push the cupboard door open and go straight to the dough set to rise before the fire. A neighbour, Mrs. Ribby, calls to borrow some yeast.
Tom Kitten scrambles up a chimney, finds mutton bones and a loosened stone, and squeezes through a tight passage behind the skirting-board in the attic. Beatrix Potter's tale was first published in 1908 and appeared in the United States as The Roly-Poly Pudding. It is dedicated to 'Sammy', described as an intelligent pink-eyed friend and a most accomplished thief. The rats Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Whiskers have a great many descendants, and Moppet and Mittens grow up into good rat-catchers.
