About this book
Pleasant Valley's birds are waiting for the sound that announces Bobby Bobolink's return from the South. His singing draws robins, wrens and blackbirds to the meadow, while old Mr. Crow finds something to grumble about even at a welcome gathering. Arthur Scott Bailey gives these feathered neighbors human voices and habits, placing their conversations among farm fields, rushes, gardens and nesting places.
Bobby's cheerful manner also meets the small misunderstandings of life among friends. A nickname causes alarm, and Mr. Catbird's attempt to imitate his song leaves Bobby and his wife puzzled beside their hidden nest. These short chapters combine bird behavior with teasing, pride and practical jokes. For children, the story offers an approachable animal world in which different personalities share the same meadow; adults reading aloud can follow the lively exchanges and the seasonal details woven into them.
