About this book

Beneath Farmer Green’s garden, an elderly mole has built a network of passages that suits him far better than life above ground. Arthur Scott Bailey gives this nearly blind digger a large appetite, strong opinions, and neighbors who do not always understand him. The tale of Grandfather Mole follows a talking animal community in short chapters, beginning with a dangerous encounter when the farm cat catches him away from his tunnels.

The humor often comes from the gap between what Grandfather Mole knows and what others can see. In one episode, he shelters beneath a toadstool and promises to lend it to Mr. Meadow Mouse when rain comes, without noticing the approaching shower. Conversations about comfort, courtesy, and keeping promises turn small garden incidents into social disagreements. Young readers can follow these everyday scrapes while seeing how the mole’s habits shape his dealings with friends.
