About this book

Beneath Farmer Green's snow-covered pasture, a woodchuck family sleeps through winter while Johnnie Green walks overhead. When spring returns, one of the five young woodchucks stands out for his appetite and stubbornness. Billy soon takes pride in his tail and whiskers, but his neighbors discover how easily a few teasing names can upset him. His mother's warnings also come under strain when a friendly fox offers him a surprise.

Arthur Scott Bailey's 1916 animal story follows Billy through short chapters of conversation, mistakes and tricks. An unfair bargain with Uncle Jerry Chuck exposes his trusting nature: Billy thinks they are taking turns watching for danger, until Jimmy Rabbit explains what really happened. Woodland habits and recognizably human behavior share the same pasture. For children, the episodes give clear examples of vanity, trust and fair dealing, with humor carried by the animals' different personalities.
