About this book
Names and definitions reach their limits in the opening chapters of this Chinese philosophical text. In James Legge's translation, Laozi considers how the Tao can be spoken of while remaining beyond any fixed description. Brief numbered passages alternate prose with verse, moving from the origin of things to the conduct of a sage. Water, a hollow vessel, and the empty space inside a room turn abstract ideas into familiar images.
Advice about governing appears alongside reflections on ambition, wealth, and the wish for recognition. The sage avoids rivalry and claims of ownership, while later passages weigh fame against life and suggest that softness can overcome hardness.
