About this book
This translation by Herbert A. Giles, dated London 1889 and naming his post as H. B. M.'s Consul at Tamsui, carries the subtitle Mystic, Moralist, and Social Reformer. The contents list an introduction, a note on the philosophy of Chuang Tzŭ by Canon Moore, and numbered chapters with titles such as Transcendental Bliss, The Identity of Contraries, How to Govern, Horses' Hoofs, On Letting Alone, Perfect Happiness and Mountain Trees.
One passage tells how T'ien Ch'êng Tzŭ took the state of Ch'i and the wisdom-tricks of the Sages with it, and a comment notes that commentators have failed to explain away its last sentence. Another passage turns to the unknowable, using certainty to dispel doubt, with a remark by Lin Hsi Chung. A chapter headed Tsê Yang begins with a short Argument, and a story about Wang T'ai includes the line that the discrepancy of his toes is to him as the loss of so much mud.
