About this book
The Task, and Other Poems is by William Cowper, in an 1899 edition. Its introduction says that after the publication of Table Talk and other poems in March 1782, Cowper lived in quiet retirement at Olney under Mrs. Unwin's care and found a new friend in Lady Austen, a baronet's widow whose sister was married to a clergyman near Olney.
In one passage of verse the sofa is traced back through earlier seats: necessity invented stools, convenience next suggested elbow-chairs, and luxury the sofa last. The same passage compares the sleep of a nurse, a man who leaves the coach-box, a curate and a clerk with the rest the sofa gives. Another passage speaks of cards as a way of filling empty hours and says that time has a dove's wing, unsoiled and swift, while the world's time is time in masquerade.
