About this book
The Flower of the Mind is a choice among the best poems made by Alice Meynell. The introduction says that a general Anthology gathered from the whole of English literature by a gatherer intent upon nothing except the quality of poetry is a more rare enterprise than partial collections of English poems. The contents list poets including Richard Lovelace, Henry Vaughan, William Blake and Robert Burns, and poem titles such as To Lucasta on Going to the Wars, The Garden, The Tiger and To a Mouse.
A quoted poem says that the mind, from pleasure less, withdraws into its happiness, and calls the mind that ocean where each kind does straight its own resemblance find. Verse in the book speaks of annihilating all that’s made to a green thought in a green shade. A note remarks that Andrew Marvell’s political rectitude, it is true, seems to have been of a robustious kind.
