About this book
The Tipster is by Edwin Lefevre. A man named Gilmartin takes a telephone call that he explains is from his brokers, and says he would have saved five hundred dollars if he had been at his desk at half-past ten. Gilmartin asks Hopkins what he says to lunch, feeling entitled to a glass of fizz to forget his bad luck of this morning.
A man who was once an honored and pampered customer is asked to stay away from an office, and becomes a Wall Street "has been" seen daily on New Street, back of the Consolidated Exchange. Gilmartin tells himself with a burst of curious self-contempt that he can't even buy a cup of coffee.
