About this book

An October house party in 1891 brings the habits of the Pendyce family into sharp focus. At Worsted Skeynes, servants arrange arrivals while guests measure one another's standing. Horace Pendyce treats his estate as a model of good management, though his certainty about the tenants' needs sits uneasily beside their wish for independence. John Galsworthy makes these tensions visible through dinner conversation, family connections and the small ceremonies of an English country house.

Mrs. Jaspar Bellew's presence prompts gossip about her separation from her husband and her friendship with George Pendyce. Elsewhere, Gregory Vigil and Mrs. Shortman argue about the usefulness of a meeting on working women's lives, exposing differences between charitable intentions and practical help. The novel offers readers interested in social observation a close view of how privilege shapes judgment. Its humour grows from people who consider their own preferences sound principles for everyone else.
