About this book

James Frisby looks back on his youth from the porch of Fairlee, his home on Maryland's eastern shore. His account begins as the province gathers men for the American Revolution. Eighteen years old and eager to serve, he rides toward the Head of Elk with his friend Dick Ringgold. Along their route through forests and river crossings, they encounter Gordon of the Braes, a suspected Tory, riding with his daughter.

The Tory Maid combines this personal account of military service with a romance shaped by opposing loyalties. James and Mistress Jean exchange playful remarks about his support for the rebellion and her Tory sympathies. He must then carry a dispatch to the Council of Safety in Annapolis, crossing the bay in a swift sailing boat as an English warship opens fire. Herbert Baird Stimpson gives readers horseback travel, political banter and danger on the water through James's recollections.
