About this book

The Toys of Peace, and Other Papers is a volume of tales dedicated to the 22nd Royal Fusiliers. Its contents list begins with A Memoir of H. H. Munro and continues with titles such as Louise, Tea, The Wolves of Cernogratz, The Interlopers, The Hedgehog and The Occasional Garden. A note thanks the editors of the Morning Post, the Westminster Gazette and the Bystander for allowing tales from their pages to be reprinted.

In one passage, friends gather in a prison gateway around Demosthenes Platterbaff, who will not leave without a band, while telegraph boys bring in messages and the Chief Organiser asks the Prison Governor about drums and cymbals. In another passage, Luitpold Wolkenstein reads a newspaper report that the fortress of Kirk Kilisseh has fallen and that the Serbs have taken Kumanovo.
