About this book

House-party conversation becomes an awkward game when Leonard Bilsiter claims to possess Siberian magic. His hostess challenges him to turn her into a wolf, while Clovis Sangrail quietly investigates the possibility of borrowing a real animal. That opening sets the tone for Saki's 1914 collection of short stories, where drawing-room confidence meets schemes that polite society has little ability to control.

Animals, supernatural suggestions and social pretensions give these comic tales their particular bite. The middle excerpt shifts to a newspaper office whose staff has gone missing, then introduces Sophie Chattel-Monkheim, a wealthy woman whose enthusiasm for redistributing money sits comfortably beside her own fortune. Saki works through dialogue and a narrator alert to the gap between what people profess and how they behave. Readers interested in brief British fiction can find here a concentrated study of vanity, fashionable opinions and the trouble caused by taking oneself too seriously.
