The preface says The Trade Union Woman by Alice Henry is a brief account of trade unionism in relation to the working-women of the United States, written to furnish a handbook of the subject. The preface says the account also aims to supply in convenient form answers to the questions that are daily put to the writer. One chapter says the earliest factory employment to engage large numbers of women was the cotton industry of New England.
The text names the local strike as the first form of trade-union activity among wage-earning women in the United States. The text says a small strike took place in July, 1828, in the cotton mills of Paterson, New Jersey, among the boy and girl helpers over the apparently trifling detail of a change of the dinner hour from twelve o'clock to one. One passage says that, with the present question, the one important fact which explains a good deal is the youth of so many women workers.
