About this book
The Employments of Women, by Virginia Penny, presents itself as a cyclopædia of woman's work dedicated to worthy and industrious women in the United States striving to earn a livelihood. A correspondent who has been a bank cashier for many years expresses no doubt that women might qualify as bank and brokers' clerks, but doubts whether cashier and teller work would be suitable because of contact with rough characters.
The account of wire work describes a woman employed in Philadelphia to weave fine wire, a skill learned in Scotland, and to sew pieces of fine wire cloth together. The woman weaving fine wire receives $5 a week and seldom works ten hours a day. A cigar maker says he pays women the same price as men, with payment depending on the quality and workmanship of the cigars.
