About this book

Ten Greek tragedies appear in Theodore Alois Buckley's English translation, accompanied by an introduction and notes intended for students. This 1892 edition brings together works including Hecuba, Medea and Alcestis, as well as both Iphigenia plays. Buckley's preface explains his revisions and distinguishes the more advanced textual notes from elementary guidance, giving readers a sense of the scholarly approach behind the volume.

A dispute between father and son in the passage from Hippolytus turns on an accusation conveyed in a letter. The father orders banishment, while the son appeals to his oaths and asks for evidence to be examined. Their confrontation places family authority, belief and judgment at the center of dramatic argument. Readers interested in Greek mythology on stage can study how accusations and competing claims take shape through dialogue, alongside editorial commentary on the plays and their language.

About the author

Euripides

Euripides wrote for the Athenian stage through the long war with Sparta, and his sympathies ran toward the losers: slaves, foreigners, captives, women. Roughly nineteen of his ninety-odd plays survive, the largest surviving body of work by any Greek tragedian. He died in Macedonia in 406 BCE.
