About this book
The Undying Past is by Hermann Sudermann, translated by Beatrice Marshall. The mid-day sun beats fiercely on the much-trodden square in front of a provincial railway station, and an old white mare nods drowsily between the shafts of a yellow mailcart.
Leo asks Ulrich whether he thinks Leo has roughened somewhat out there amongst savages, and says he has come back sound and whole. Leo describes himself as a fellow who has sifted and proved himself, so that he doubts whether in the whole of God's earthly garden there grows a finer specimen than his lowly self. A speaker says she stayed in Geneva till she was thirteen, names Ada von Wehrheimb as her greatest friend, and says she then went to Hamburg to Frau Lüttgen's, whom they knew in Wiesbaden. The picture "Tired of life" is recalled, along with the thought that artists, with their wide views and great minds, were the men who understood the hearts of women.
