The Vicar of Bullhampton is a bold and compassionate novel by Anthony Trollope, published in 1870. Its hero, the sturdy country parson Frank Fenwick, stands by two unpopular people against the opinion of his parish: a young woman who has fallen into disgrace and the family of a man wrongly suspected of murder. As gossip, a feuding landlord, and a rival clergyman turn against him, the vicar's stubborn charity is put to the test. Trollope wrote the book partly to plead for kinder treatment of women who had strayed, and he handles a delicate subject with rare honesty and warmth.
