About this book

Lay Morals, and Other Papers is by Robert Louis Stevenson, in a new edition with a preface by Mrs. Stevenson. The preface, by Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson, recalls a long voyage on the yacht Casco on which many islands were visited and the writer believed the scourge of leprosy was found on every one. The preface says that in the Marquesas there was a regular leper settlement, though the persons living there seemed free to wander where they wished.

The text says that every now and then, and indeed surprisingly often, Christ finds a word that transcends all common-place morality. The text says the umbrella cannot be supposed to have an affinity for individual men equal and reciprocal to that which men certainly feel toward individual umbrellas. A scene has a curate tell a laird named Montroymont that she has got to come to the kirk, and the laird says he can do nothing with her.
