About this book

Josephus begins by challenging accounts that, in his view, flatter Rome or misrepresent the Jews. He presents himself as a Hebrew priest who fought against the Romans and later witnessed their campaigns. In William Whiston's translation, this ancient history pairs a stated concern for accurate reporting with the author's grief for Jerusalem and criticism of leaders among his own people.

The narrative also follows the negotiations and local divisions behind military events. In the account of Tiberias, Vespasian sends horsemen to seek assurances of loyalty, only for an armed group to drive them away. City elders then appeal to the Roman general, with King Agrippa supporting their plea. These scenes give readers interested in ancient history a view of competing authorities, troubled cities and the way a participant explains the causes and costs of conflict.

About the author
