About this book
The Were-Wolf is by Clemence Housman, with illustrations by Laurence Housman, 1896. A great farm hall was ablaze with the fire-light and noisy with laughter and talk and many-sounding work, with little Rol hugging a puppy and old Trella, whose palsied hand fumbled over her knitting. Little Rol managed to secure a fine chisel and take off its point on the leg of the table, and the carver's strong objections disconcerted him.
The text includes a mournful song that drifted along in a minor chant, sad as a wind that dirges, with the lines Oh, let me go! Around spin wreaths of snow; The dark earth sleeps below. A man comes to the lopped point of Christian's bear-spear, finds the snow dashed with blood, and groans O White Fell, my poor, brave love! Well struck! The list of plates names Holy Water, Rol's Worship, White Fell's Escape, The Race, The Finish and Sweyn's Finding.
