The Secret of Kralitz by Henry Kuttner is introduced as a story of the shocking revelation that came to the twenty-first Baron Kralitz. The narrator says he awoke from profound sleep to find two black-swathed forms standing silently beside him, their faces pale blurs in the gloom. The narrator says that his father, the Baron Kralitz, had revealed to him the secret and the curse that hung over their ancient house.
The father tells Franz that the first Baron burnt the old monastery near the village and put the monks to the sword. The father says that before he died the Abbot cursed his slayer, and cursed his sons for unborn generations. A huge bearded man with a frightful scar rises at the foot of the board and says We greet you, Franz, Baron Kralitz.
