On a moonlit London road, drawing master Walter Hartright meets a frightened woman dressed all in white, an encounter that pulls him into one of Victorian fiction's most tangled conspiracies. Taking a teaching post at a country estate, he falls for his pupil Laura Fairlie, whose approaching marriage hides a scheme built on stolen identity, a locked asylum, and a fortune. Against the plot stand two of the era's finest creations: the resourceful Marian Halcombe and the smiling, monstrous Count Fosco. Wilkie Collins told the story through overlapping testimonies, as if assembling a legal case, and in doing so helped invent the sensation novel and the modern mystery.

Wilkie Collins

Collins wrote The Woman in White for Dickens's magazine and then The Moonstone, which is usually called the first English detective novel and gave the form Sergeant Cuff, the country-house theft and the unreliable multiple narration.
