About this book
The World of Homer is a book by Andrew Lang, with illustrations, dated 1910. Its preface recalls that in 1895 he published Homer and the Epic, which criticised Wolf's theory, and says that he analysed the Iliad and the Odyssey book by book, defending many passages against charges of lateness and inconsistency.
One passage lists successive ages by their metals, burials and dress, and says that the costume and the pins and brooches it describes are those Homer describes. It also mentions the cemetery outside the Dipylon gate at Athens. Another passage notes that Homer ignores Theseus, quotes Mr. Leaf and Mr. Monro on Homer's lack of acquaintance with the Theseus legends, and recalls that in the dialogue Minos, Socrates points out the praise Homer gives to Minos. Another compares repeated lines in the ballads Auld Maitland, Chevy Chase and Jamie Telfer.
