About this book
A Monk of Fife is "Being the Chronicle written by Norman Leslie of Pitcullo, concerning marvellous deeds that befell in the realm of France, in the years of our redemption, MCCCCXXIX-XXXI." Andrew Lang is named in the words "Now first done into English out of the French by Andrew Lang." The dedication, addressed "TO HENRIETTA LANG", says "To you, who read to me stories from the History of France, before I could read them for myself, this Chronicle is affectionately dedicated."
A passage on the state of France says "Such was the face of France in many counties. The fields lay weedy and untilled; the starving peasant-folk took to the highway, every man preying on his neighbour." A man in the text is found "standing up to his waist in the water, taking soundings with a long and heavy staff". A speaker says "Write, then, write the story of thy sinful life, that I may give thee absolution."
