About this book
The preface presents the volume as a response to interest shown by pupils, teachers and the general public in talks on the causes of the great European war. The audiences included school pupils, students, public-school teachers, business men and representatives of boards of education. The historical discussion explains the doctrine by which kings claimed divine appointment and responsibility to God alone.
The account of naval warfare describes the Hogue beginning to sink after a torpedo explosion. A sister ship rushes to rescue the struggling crew, and a second torpedo strikes a second ship. The discussion states that England controlled the sea's surface but could not prevent German submarines from moving beneath the water.
