About this book

Written in 1919 by the chief of the National Park Service's educational division, this guide sets out to describe every American national park and to explain how each landscape was made. Robert Sterling Yard groups the parks by the rock that shaped them: granite parks such as Yosemite and the Rockies, volcanic parks from Mount Rainier and Crater Lake to Yellowstone and Hawaii, sedimentary parks like Glacier and Mesa Verde, and finally the Grand Canyon and the monuments of the Southwest.

Between the park chapters sit short notes on how granite, volcanoes and layered rock produce scenery, which Yard urges the curious reader not to skip. The chapters themselves mix geology with practical travel. In Yellowstone he describes geysers, lakes and trout streams, the three railroads that reached the park, and the new motor stages that turned a hurried six-day tour into a leisurely summer stay.

It works both as a readable lesson in landscape and as a picture of the park system in 1919, when at least one entry, the proposed Roosevelt National Park, was still only a plan.
