About this book
The Yser and the Belgian Coast is subtitled An Illustrated History and Guide. The text describes the Vindictive, Iris and Daffodil advancing behind a smoke screen to within a few cable-lengths of the mole, where a change of wind left them fully exposed to view. The account says a landing was nevertheless effected, and that in spite of heavy losses the sailors and marines advanced along the mole under very heavy fire.
King Albert is quoted issuing an Order of the Day to soldiers: for two months and more they have been fighting for the most just of causes, their homes and national independence. The text says there was no hope of new supplies, as the army was deprived of its arsenals. The guide gives an itinerary for the second day from Ostend, by way of Zeebrugge to Bruges, leaving Ostend by Rue de la Chapelle.
