About this book
Theocritus, translated into English Verse is the work of Theocritus rendered by C.S. Calverley, late fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge. The preface says the translator had intended to translate all or nearly all these Idylls into blank verse, but found that other metres had their special advantages. The preface notes that the fourteen-syllable line in particular has the advantage of containing about the same number of syllables as an ordinary line of Theocritus.
The preface says the translator has ventured to dissent from Professor Blackie and others in retaining the Greek, instead of adopting the Roman, nomenclature. In one dialogue Praxinoä is told to look and note well this broidery, and a stranger says Bad luck t'you, cease your senseless pigeon's prate. In another piece a beast answers Cythera with an oath, saying I meant no mischief to the man Who seemed to thee so fair.
