About this book
Three Thousand Years of Mental Healing is a book by George Barton Cutten. The book is dedicated to the memory of Artemus Wyman Sawyer. The contents list chapters on Relics and Shrines, Healers, Talismans, Amulets, Charms and Royal Touch.
The text says the mind can readily attend to only one thing at a time; if that be pain, for example, that takes up all of our attention. The text gives examples: the sufferer from neuralgia experiences no pain as he responds to the fire alarm, and the toothache stops entirely as we undergo the excitement and fear of entering the dentist's office. The text says there is also little doubt concerning the early belief in the efficacy of an amulet to ward off diseases, and to protect against supernatural agencies. A testimony from Rev. W. F. Evans, still another patient and disciple of Quimby's, says that disease being in its root a wrong belief, change that belief and we cure the disease.
