About this book

Through the Iron Bars, subtitled Two Years of German Occupation in Belgium, is a book by Emile Cammaerts. The chapter headed The Prison Gates opens by saying that the English-speaking public is generally well informed concerning the part played in the war by the Belgian troops. The contents list names, among others, The Prison Gates, The Lowered Flag, The Poisoned Wells and The Sacking of Belgium, and an addendum of cartoons by Louis Raemaekers.

The text says the German occupation of Belgium may be roughly divided into two periods, one before the fall of Antwerp and one after the fall of the great fortress, and that only the second period is its concern. The text says General von Bissing has declared that the Belgians are an enigma to him. The text says there is every reason to believe that the deportations were part and parcel of the German peace manoeuvre.
