About this book
Belgians Under the German Eagle is by Jean Massart, Vice-Director of the Class of Sciences in the Royal Academy of Belgium. The preface says the pages were written in Belgium between the 4th August, 1914, and the 15th August, 1915. The preface says the writer observed a rule of selection in using these documents, using exclusively those which are of German origin, or which are censored by the Germans.
A section headed Newspapers introduced surreptitiously says that, despite all prohibitions and all the sentences pronounced, prohibited newspapers continue to trickle into the occupied portion of the country. The text calls the most instructive card of this kind that the writers have seen one representing General Beeger amid the ruins of Dinant. One first-person account says the group arrived at Arlon and was lined up against a wall, and that an officer on horseback approached.
