About this book
Time Enough at Last by Lyn Venable comes from the January 1953 issue of IF Worlds of Science Fiction, according to the transcriber's note. Henry Bemis has long had one ambition, to read a whole book from beginning to end. He has no time of his own: his wife Agnes owns the part of it that his employer, Mr. Carsville, does not buy, and his eyes are so poor that he can hardly see his hand in front of his face.
Henry is a teller at the Eastside Bank & Trust. In one scene he slips into the vault to read a magazine, and an enormous noise crashes in on him. In another passage he thinks about Agnes, bridge with the Joneses, canasta with the Graysons, and the television she loves to watch but never alone. In a third he chooses one volume from a pile, sits on an overturned shelf and opens it, smiling, and the shelf shifts under him.
