About this book

A letter from his father brings Jean Isbel from Oregon toward a troubled cattle range in Arizona. At his camp, sharp-tasting water and barren country remind him of the cool water and shaded forests he misses. Cedar smoke offers a new pleasure amid the unfamiliar surroundings. His father writes of missing stock and sheepmen moving into the Tonto country, turning a family summons into a warning of conflict.

Zane Grey builds this 1921 Western around the tensions of ranch life and a feud inspired by the Pleasant Valley War. His foreword describes repeated visits to the Tonto Basin and the conflicting accounts he gathered there. In the story, Jean keeps watch near the ranch as riders approach, while the household prepares for danger. Broad valleys and rough mountain country give the action its scale. The novel offers readers both frontier adventure and a view of how inherited loyalties place families under pressure.

About the author

Zane Grey

Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author who left a dental practice to become the best-selling writer of Western fiction. His romanticized frontier adventures, above all Riders of the Purple Sage, shaped the popular image of the American West and sold in the millions.
