About this book

Often called the book that defined the Western, this 1912 novel unfolds in the red-rock canyon country of southern Utah in 1871. Jane Withersteen, a wealthy Mormon rancher, refuses to be pushed into a polygamous marriage and is punished by the men who control her town. Into her troubles rides Lassiter, a black-clad gunman hunting the grave of a woman whose fate has haunted him for years and the men responsible for it. As Jane's cattle begin to vanish and the pressure mounts, old loyalties fracture and violence closes in. Grey pairs sweeping landscape with a tense story of independence, faith, and vengeance that fixed the shape of frontier fiction for generations. Zane Grey

Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author who left a dental practice to become the best-selling writer of Western fiction. His romanticized frontier adventures, above all Riders of the Purple Sage, shaped the popular image of the American West and sold in the millions.
