About this book

Told by the Death's Head is the title of a book whose preface says its writer once came across a skull that is said to swing, enclosed in a metal casket, from an iron bar in the foundry of Ehrenbreitstein fortress. The preface also calls an empty shell of human wisdom the bearer of no less than twenty-one mortal sins, with each crime noted.

An accused person is asked, What is your name?, and answers that in Podolia the name is Jaroslav Tergusko, in Zbarasz Zdenko Kohaninsky and in Odessa Frater Hilarius. To the question What is your religion? the answer is that the speaker was born an Augsburg Confession heretic and became a Socinian when going to Cracow. A bar-room scene has the inn-keeper's wife accusing the soldiers of stealing the thaler given to her by the sergeant for the beer.
