About this book
Public opinion and courtroom evidence pull in different directions in Francis Russell's account of the Sacco-Vanzetti case. Published in 1962, Tragedy in Dedham follows the Massachusetts proceedings through a chronology of arrests, hearings, appeals and public protests. Russell opens with his own memories of Boston in 1927, recalling the police, pickets and arriving buses around the State House. He also examines how family loyalties, newspapers and social standing shaped convictions about the two defendants.
The personal recollections sit alongside a historical investigation organized around the trials and their aftermath. A later passage follows Sacco through imprisonment and hospital observation, bringing the strain of the legal process into view. Readers interested in American legal history will find an account of disputed evidence and the force of public belief, with a timeline and source section that help place the controversy in sequence.
