About this book
This is J. E. Crawford Flitch's English translation of Miguel de Unamuno's Tragic Sense of Life. Its contents list an introductory essay and the author's preface, then a chapter on the man of flesh and bone, naming Kant, Butler and Spinoza.
One passage compares Unamuno with Wordsworth and discusses his sense of form and the Basque character. In another passage Unamuno argues that faith in God rests on a vital need to give existence a purpose, and that the consciousness of the universe is made up of the consciousnesses of the beings within it. He also mentions his novel Amor y Pedagogia, and pictures the human race exhausted at the foot of a pile of libraries.
