About this book

Kinship, compensation and shared land provide the starting points for Frederic Seebohm's study of early English law. Published in 1902, this historical essay approaches Anglo-Saxon legal records through comparisons with Welsh, Irish, Continental and Scandinavian customs. Seebohm gives particular attention to wergeld, the payment made after a killing, and to the currencies used to calculate it. The amounts assigned to different people also become evidence for the divisions of rank within tribal society.

The discussion moves between legal clauses, family relationships and the practical distribution of property. In the Scandinavian material, Seebohm examines how a grandfather's holding passed through successive generations, comparing the claims of sons and grandsons with the Welsh family unit. Readers interested in medieval institutions will find a sustained argument about how older collective obligations can be traced in later laws, supported by translated passages and comparisons across several regions.
