About this book

A hurried appeal for help interrupts preparations for Clover Carr's first evening dress. Katy brings news that Mrs. Ashe fears her visiting nephew has scarlet fever, and offers to take the woman's daughter, Amy, into the Carr home. Clover helps arrange a room, while the sisters comfort a child upset by her sudden departure. Clothes, parties and neighbourly concern give the opening its close view of family life in Burnet.

Susan Coolidge's 1886 story for young readers also follows Katy's travels in Europe. A meeting with Lilly Page brings two ways of seeing the same places into focus. Lilly remembers purchases and fashionable dresses, while Katy talks about visits to the Louvre, Versailles and St. Cloud. Their conversation connects travel with questions of taste, friendship and manners. Readers can follow both the practical kindness of the Carr household and the social observations that accompany Katy abroad.
